Come nei giochi precedenti della serie, Dreamfall Chapters è ambientato in due mondi paralleli: Stark, una visione dispotica della Terra nel 2220 CE, e Arcadia, il mondo magico e fantastico conttrapposto. L'equilibrio tra i due mondi impedisce agli individui e agli oggetti di viaggiare tra di essi, ma le protagoniste di The Longest Journey e Dreamfall (rispettivamente April Ryan e Zoë Castillo) hanno trovato diversi modi di viaggiare dalla loro nativa Stark fino ad Arcadia e viceversa.
Dopo aver subito i danni del catastrofico Collasso, in The Longest Journey, nel 2209, la società di Stark si stava sgretolando, anche a causa delle miliardi di persone che diventavano dipendenti dalla tecnologia, soprattutto da un macchinario, inventato dalla WatiCorp, che permetteva alle persone di sognare lucidamente. Nel frattempo, ad Arcadia, il dispotico impero Azadi consolida nuovamente il suo potere, mentre la loro torre a Marcuria "continua a raccogliere i sogni".
